FVDP Vintners Terminim Alder Springs Vineyard Syrah 2018, Mendocino County, California

Deep purple in color with a purplish rim.

Fruity nose with cooked plums, cherries, wood, light vanilla, light vegetables, earth, tobacco, dark chocolates, spices and black pepper.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with black plums, blackcurrants, oak, spices, vanilla, tobacco, coffee, chocolates, bitter herbs and peppercorn.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a juicy Syrah from Mendocino County in California. Drinking very nicely now with lots of fruits. Nicely balanced with a nice, soft mouthfeel.

Good right out of the bottle, but better after a couple of hours of airtime, when the complexity comes in.

This Single Vineyard is spicy and interesting. Rich and powerful. A good quality California Syrah.

Still young and would be nice to revisit it in 5 years, although very approachable now.

A nice collaboration between an American wine maker and a Northern Rhone wine maker . A small production of only 300 cases.

I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.

$65.

🔥‘Tis the season for roasting vegetables! With my garden full of sweet peppers, I showed how to make the Catalonian Romesco sauce, not to be confused with Romanesco Broccoli. This classic sauce is said to have been made by fishermen to be served with fish!

A toasty, almost buttered-popcorn nose greets. Down inside, creamy fruit lurks, asparagus and sultry melon, grassy loam and the spectre of nectarine. Oblique wet stone coats all in subdues tones, never rising to quite a *petrichor* level–the pure plushness always stands in the way.

Subtlety rich on the palate, an extravagant white never whoring itself out to pure in-your-face power, instead taking calm, collected steps to stack all the elegant parts into a tower of finesse. Vibrantly thin, the bitter of structure making claim to the mouthfeel in calculated ways. Cold, it instills bright fruity acid and dank thoughts, at warmer temperatures the flow of nectar over the tongue make strides toward a rich nutty elegance. Find the sweet-spot and you have a wine–while pleasing on both sides–dark and complex, full of life and begging for age.

🎼 Wake Up, Little Sushi 🎶 (Encore)

This is how we rolled today..... 😎

The saying goes, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” My blatantly copying this intro for my post from my friend @wine_food_explorer TWICE is just that. I enjoyed using it so much the first time that I had to repeat it! Thanks Robert! 😉🙏🏼

Now to the post.....

It has been a hot week in Southern California, so much so that this serial red wine drinker has been drawn to white wines for a change. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I recently had the pleasure of drinking this delicious 2019 Terminim Cepages d’Or (Golden Grapes) white blend with winemaker Donald Patz on a virtual Zoom tasting organized by my buddy @bigrickc_. With sushi on the dinner card tonight, i thought it would be the perfect pairing! 🤤

Staying true to it’s name, this wine was a brilliant gold color. A blend of Marsanne (54%), Roussanne (22%), Viognier (12%) and Picpoul Blanc (12%), it had pronounced aromas of peach, pineapple, lemon and white flowers. On the palate the wine was vibrant and crisp with peach, lemon and grapefruit flavors taking over my tastebuds. It had great acidity which made my mouth water and winemaker Donald Patz attributed that to the Picpoul Blanc in this white blend. Absolutely delicious! 😋

It was great to hear Donald share his history in the wine industry, which he has been in from the beginning of his career. #blessed I learned that Donald is the Patz of Patz & Hall wines, another label that I have enjoyed. I also learned that Terminim is a collaboration between Donald Patz and François Villard , owner Domaine Francois Villard in the northern Rhône Valley of France, who’s wines I also enjoy a lot! No wonder I liked this wine which had some serious pedigree!! 💪🏼🤯

This crisp wine paired with the Angry Tail Roll (Spicy Tuna, Cucumber, Yellowtail, Jalapeño) made me one happy camper! 😍

Here’s to drinking interesting wines made in California with a great mix of old world and new world characteristics! Cheers & Santé!🍷

At this time of ongoing pandemic apocalypse small At this time of ongoing pandemic apocalypse small family owned wineries need to stand together and support each other’s efforts much more than ever before. I am posting wines from other small producers and challenging them to do the same expanding our circle of comrades as we go. It might look like the COVID-19 threat has abated with the reopening of many businesses but this week California has seen a sudden increase in cases – this just keeps on going. It’s not over yet!
Today’s California Wine Challenge is @arcadian_winery and @joe3277 – Joe Davis and I go back a bit in the wine business. My first interaction with him was dinner with one of the our shared distributor’s top sales people in Phoenix. That was fun – and we stumble across each other regularly and special events. His wines are distinctive and worth searching out.
This wine – 2012 ARCANDIAN “Cloe Pepe Vineyard” Sta. Rita Hills – Pinot Noir. If there was an area that I still wish I could get grapes and make wine from in California it is the Sta. Rita Hills in the Central Coast. So many really exciting Pinot Noir wines are being produced from grapes in this area. Joe gets to make it though – and it was a pleasure to have this wine with dinner the other night. Yeah. 2012. It’s fully mature in my opinion – filled up with dried flower, herb, fresh earth and Bing cherry notes. Smooth, complete – just a lovely wine. Nice work Joe.
So, if you will @joe3277 and @arcadian_winery - you’ve been challenged! Please, choose another small family owned winery to meet this #californiawinechallenge and post on your Instagram account to pass it on with the hashtag #californiawinechallenge .

I tasted this earlier in the year at Hospice du Rhone and it was one of my favorite whites of the day. In the mouth, the headiness undeniably Rhone white varieties comes on early and strong. This is not Chard or Viognier. Respectfully fat as a South France grape should be, but tempered with the Northern Rhone crispness Mendocino easily delivers. The oxide and stone really show at cooler temperatures, with bitter edginess coupled perfectly to the floral and melon. - Tasted the Cépages d’Or 2017 Terminim Marsanne 66% and Rousanne 34% from the Alder Springs Vineyard in Mendocino County.
