The supreme red grape variety for the Northern Rhône Valley – this time grown in northern Mendocino County. The steep hillsides and distinctive sandstone-based soils at Alder Springs Vineyard are ideally suited to Syrah.
This collaboration includes some fun winemaking twists. After tasting a number of Syrahs from California together François in particular wanted to see if we could make a more elegant and perfumed style that typical from our state. In particular, he described the extraction/fermentation protocol to include a bucket by bucket wetting of the stems, skins and seeds that formed the cap that is now known as “Methode François”. As far as we know, we are the only winery using this technique on Syrah.
The 2017 vintage is stunning, with blackberry, complex dried herb and roasted meat aromas. It is crafted in a style rarely seen in California but not uncommon in Côte Rôtie – elegant, perfumed and balanced tannins. This wine will no doubt stand the test of time.
François Villard and Donald Patz announce the release of their first Syrah collaboration from the Alder Springs Vineyard in Mendocino County. The 2017 vintage of TERMINIM Syrah was harvested well before the fires in Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino Counties. As you might expect it is an interesting combination of California Syrah grapes coupled with French and American winemaking. François took the lead in conceptualizing this wine and Donald oversaw the day to day execution of their plan. It’s a true collaboration and the results are a unique melding of two great Syrah growing regions.
A mere 120 cases of this wine were produced.
